Paid off your buyout loan? Get a lien-free title
If a lender financed your lease buyout, its name goes on the New Jersey title. When the loan is paid, the lien does not disappear by itself.
What is a lien on a title?
The MVC explains a lien as a property claim. For a vehicle purchase, the lending institution holds the title until the vehicle is paid in full. If a lender financed your buyout, that lender is recorded as lienholder, and the MVC says titles with liens are only given to lienholders, not to customers.
What happens at the final payment?
Paying off the loan ends what you owe. It does not, on its own, change the MVC record. The MVC describes a separate transaction: requesting re-issuance of a lien-free title. It can be made at a motor vehicle agency or by mail, and the new title is issued without the lienholder noted.
What do you bring?
At an agency you provide either the New Jersey title endorsed with the lien, or the New Jersey title with the lien satisfaction letter attached. The fee listed by the MVC is $60.
To remove a lien, the MVC lists these items:
- Proof of ownership, such as the title, or a registration or insurance card or declaration page.
- Proof of final loan payment, one of these:
- a signed, dated lien satisfaction letter on company letterhead that names all owners and gives the company’s name, address and phone number plus the vehicle’s VIN, year and make matching the title;
- a motor vehicle dealer wire transfer statement with a transaction number; or
- a retail installment agreement with a matching VIN, bearing the financial institution’s name and a bank stamp and date.
Additional proof is not needed if you have the original NJ title with the lien satisfaction signed and dated by an authorized representative of the lienholder. Satisfaction letters from individual lienholders who are not financial institutions must be notarized, and the MVC reserves the right to ask for additional proof of payment.
By mail
The MVC page tells mail applicants to include the endorsed title (or title with the satisfaction letter attached) and a $60 check or money order payable to the NJMVC, sent to the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, Database Corrections Unit, 225 East State Street, PO Box 141, Trenton, NJ 08666-0141. Mail is slower than an agency visit and carries your original title, so many owners prefer to go in person.
Not sure who the MVC shows as lienholder?
The MVC offers a title/lien search that returns the current lienholder and owner information in its database. It can be requested online, or by mail with Form DO-22, a copy of your driver’s license and a $15 check or money order, according to its page. For questions the MVC lists its Certified Information Unit at (609) 292-4102.
Habits that save trouble
- Ask for the lien satisfaction letter at payoff. Lenders send them, sometimes slowly. Check that the VIN and every owner’s name are right.
- Keep the letter with your loan papers until the new title arrives.
- Confirm fees and forms on nj.gov/mvc before you go; they can change.
Lien-free title questions
Does the NJ MVC remove the lien automatically when I pay off my car loan?
No. The MVC’s lien page describes a separate request to re-issue a lien-free title, which you make at a motor vehicle agency or by mail.
What does it cost to get a lien-free title in New Jersey?
The MVC’s lien page lists a $60 fee for re-issuing a lien-free title. Confirm the current fee on nj.gov/mvc before you go or mail anything.
What proof of payoff does the MVC accept?
A signed, dated lien satisfaction letter on the lender’s letterhead with the owners’ names, company name, address, phone and the vehicle’s VIN, year and make; or a dealer wire-transfer statement; or a retail installment agreement with a matching VIN. Additional proof is not needed if the original NJ title already carries a signed, dated lien satisfaction.
Who gets the title while there is a lien?
The MVC’s page says customers shall not be given titles with liens; they can only be given to lienholders.
Can I check who the MVC shows as lienholder?
Yes. The MVC offers a title/lien search online or by mail with Form DO-22; the page lists a $15 fee for mail requests.
